Start a Pet Store Describing Activity

This pet-themed activity is a great way to get your students to describe animals with specificity. They begin with pet store placemats and then take turns “starting their pet stores” by requesting animals based on their features. The differences in the animals are based on the colors of their body parts, such as birds with different colored heads, bodies and wings. This makes the difficulty level easier than an activity with variances in size, shape, and/or missing features.

You can also use this as a receptive language activity by describing a pet and having students point to the corresponding animal.

This printable includes:

  • instructions
  • 6 color pictures for each of the animals (cats, dogs, fish, parrots, rabbits, guinea pig, iguanas, and snakes)
  • pet store placemats

Interactive Material: This material includes an interactive version that can be used in teletherapy. The file can be uploaded to Google Slides or opened in PowerPoint and then shared with the student. In order for the drag-and-drop pieces to work, make sure you are NOT in presentation mode. If you are using PowerPoint, you’ll need to enable editing.
