Initial Sound Matching Picture Cards

Initial Sound Matching Picture Cards

Awareness of phonemes, the smallest units of sound, is important for reading and working on speech sounds.  You can help your students work on one of the earliest phonemic awareness tasks by matching words that have the same initial sound.

Included are 20 pairs (40 picture cards) of words that begin with the same sound. With the printable pages, you can begin by putting three cards in front of the student and having him/her identify the two that begin with the same sound.  You can work up to having all of the cards on the table to be matched. With the interactive file, the student drags a picture from the choice box to the box next to the picture with the same initial sound.

Interactive Material: This material includes an interactive version that can be used in teletherapy. The file can be uploaded to Google Slides or opened in PowerPoint and then shared with the student. In order for the drag-and-drop pieces to work, make sure you are NOT in presentation mode. If you are using PowerPoint, you’ll need to enable editing.
